I have a traditional bench with a Tucker vise which is fantastic and a Veritas twin screw on one end. It's great for both traditional and guitar building but definitely not necessary for just guitars. I built an L shaped one (4' x 4' and 24" depth) based on input from Alan Carruth and others and it's great as well. Two layers of ply covered by a 1/4" of white finished hardboard which can be replaced easily as damage occurs. Poplar 3/4" x 1 1/2" edging makes it look good too.
