Urethane soaked rags safety

Post by Mike Perez »

I'm using Minwax oil based, wipe-on polyurethane. Wiping it with some old cotton t-shirt material.
I have placed the rags, flat it on the concrete floor overnight to harden.
When it is safe to dispose of the rags into the trash?
Is heat still being generated after the finish has hardened?
Thanks.

Once it's hard there should not be much heat, if any, produced, since it's the chemical reaction of hardening that make the heat. That said, I'd be careful. A few days in a metal can outdoors away from the house might be good insurance.
