Re: A Different Way of Steam Bending

Steam1 - Copy.JPG[/attachment]Thank you, What I meant about condensate was that as the steam cools, moisture forms and goes somewhere (as I'm sure you know) so you may end up with a puddle below the jig. Maybe a little tray below or by setting the whole assembly in a shallow baking pan to catch the ...

Re: A Different Way of Steam Bending

Well, that is an innovative way to do this and it saves on having different jigs and steam boxes. My only two thoughts would be: 1. I might use multiple rows (say 3) of steam outlets to provide steam across the entire side as opposed to just centered, and 2. What would be the best material to make t...

Gypsy Pliage jig

Hello Everyone. This is just a shot of my final Gypsy guitar pliage jig. There are a few different and good ways to accomplish this task both before joining the top and after however, after fighting with wedges and clamps and split seams and what was a thrown together rig, I constructed a 2-layer de...

Re: Bolt on issues

I would say that opening the holes a bit would not be an issue however you may want to consider building up the bottom of the tenon or the mortise to ensure that it can't slip down.

Re: Steam Box Deluxe

Thank you Jim, All good points for sure. Yes, I had planned on the thermometer and the insulation should be an easy add, especially since I am employed by a large mechanical contractor ;) . Actually, I was going to go the PVC (or rather the grey CPVC) route but my guys here just said 'we'll build so...

Re: Steam Box Deluxe

Hello Barry, Thanks for looking, Yes, I thought I would I would just use cedar or maybe even a plywood disc slightly tapered to fit inside and then one a little larger to create the lip so it doesn't fall inside. Since there really won't be any pressure involved I'm thinking the wood will swell a bi...

Steam Box Deluxe

Hello Everyone, Ok, so this may seem like gloating but I wanted to show off my new steam boxes for sides and top/back halves. Ever since I saw Frank Finnochio's method for steam-bending the tops and backs for archtop guitars I've wanted to give it a try. However, building and storing steam boxes was...

Body Form Support

Hello All, Here is my spin on a jig to help flip the body when you are gluing and clamping. I've found that gluing the top or back on is not difficult on its own however, for me, flipping the whole assembly over to inspect or clean out squeezed glue was an awkward pain not to mention heavy. So, usin...

Re: New Gypsy Build

Thanks Marshal. I appreciate the article. The Myrtle gypsy is my 3rd gypsy strung up and is the first solid back and side gypsy that I've built since Myrtle veneer is rare to find. I just love it and wish I had a stack of it. Gypsy #4 is in the works and I'm back to a traditional laminate build. It ...

Re: New Gypsy Build

Thank you Bob, Thank you Marshall. Marshall, The tapered headstock is the traditional shape for Gypsy style guitars. It is understated and quite functional. I have read and seen pics about the internal resonator used mostly on the Maccaferri era guitars in the the 1920's & 30's but have never se...

New Gypsy Build

Finally! Florida's hot summer is coming to an end for my un-conditioned garage workshop and it's time to crank out some instruments. This one is a Myrtlewood/Mahogany/Spruce 'ronde bouche' modeled after Selmer's transitional period, 670MM scale, Macasser Ebony fretboard and bridge, flamed Maple bind...

Handcrafted Luthier Tools

Hello All, It is always very interesting to see hand made tools on this forum. Speaking for me, I cannot always afford to purchase certain tools that guitar builders need in order to perform the many tasks involved in our creations. Some items of course you just have to buy unless you can build your...

Re: Form for laminating guitar sides

Hello All, As the traditional construction method for Gypsy Selmer style guitars is to laminate, I have used both inside and outside bending/laminating jigs. My first jigs were an inside type that I had copied from Michael Collins' book and videos. This worked well although a little cumbersome when ...

Side Bending Conversation

Hello Folks, Just wondering how you do your side bending. Let’s assume that many of you hand bend over an iron but for those of us who use a bending machine or apparatus this question is for you. I have a form that bent sides will sit in after they have been made. I use a silicone heating blanket an...
