Supro Dual Tone Pickup Removal- created 11-05-2008

Woods, Greg - 11/05/2008.13:12:24

Hey all. I am working on an old 50's, 60's era Supro Dual Tone guitar with Patent # 2,683,388 pickups. Does anyone have any experience with these or similar ie. Valco, Airline, or National pickups? I cannot for the life of me figure out how to remove them. The pickups do not have any visible means of attachment to the body. I have looked up the patent online and studied it, but it deals primarily with the pickup design with only a brief mention of mounting.

Thanks,

And let's have a front shot of the body, too

I kinda thought it was an awfully small picture too. I used HP Photosmart and kept reducing until it was less than 50k. I guess I'll have to try another program when I get home tonight. And yes I will post some more pics of the whole thing when I get it figured out.

When you shrink a photo to 50K or less, that has nothing to do with the actual size of the photo, but instead it's the

The pickups look like they can be removed by taking out the two screws that sit under the E string poles.

That would be my guess. Parker Fly guitars use the same idea. Your screws look mighty chewed up though. Be careful! You might need to cautiously use a pair of vise grips to get those out.

Yeah, the screw heads are pretty mangled. I was able to turn one of them about 1/4 turn with a screwdriver. Just wanted to make sure that was the correct path to take before filing better screw slots or using the ol' vise grips.

I'll figure this picture sizing thing out and post some pictures of the pickup internals once I get them off the guitar.

Tall puppies, ain't they? How high do the strings ride

Did you try removing the pickguard? The patent shows them attached to the pickguard, or the end of the fingerboard from under the pickup opposite the pole screws.

The outer two screws seem to hold the pickup to the undercarriage.

The patent shows that they are single coil pickups, even though they look like humbuckers.
