A one-car garage shop.

Post by Randy Roberts »

Spent the last two days doing a more thorough cleaning out of the shop than my usual 3 minutes with the leaf blower. Threw away 6 large garbage bags of small bits of wood I just knew I would need sometime and had saved over the past 6-7 years.
Thought it would be a good time to take a few pictures of the shop to demonstrate what you have to do when your wife thinks she has to park her car in your shop.
It’s definitely not Arnt’s soothing masterpiece of warmth and comfort, and it’s definitely not the Tweedy Dome, but it works OK .
Everything involving sawdust or making a mess has to happen out here. My apprentice insisted on being in the picture (demonstrating his usual work ethic).

I try to keep all the tools, jigs, and supplies for each process all stored in one box , for example: inlay, fretting, or bridges saddles & nuts, so I can just bring the box I need out of the basement storage.

As my wife has severe allergies to most any kind of sawdust, all the wood, molds, larger jigs , etc. , are stored in the attic above the garage, accessed through a drop down ladder in garage ceiling.

Here’s the whole attic.
And then I can’t leave out the ping -pong table photo studio in the basement. <g>

:P I love these shop threads. I get all sortsa great ideas from seeing other people's solutions to storage and work areas.

As with Chuck's shop, for a garage, that is one well-organized space, Randy. And the satellite storage in the attic and basement for wood and other bits is a good compromise: it really allows the limited work space to be just that.

Do you use the rock-climbing wall to build up strength in your hands and arms for chiseling and planing? :P

Your wood stash is impressive. Looks like some really good stuff in there.
Looks great man!
I have a very similar roll-up wall to my shop.

Randy, that looks like a very well organized shop. It inspired me to sweep the floor of mine. <g> I think they should do an "Extreme Makeover: Workshop Edition". I would volunteer my shop as the first candidate.
