Shellac sealer

Postby James Ansara » Fri Jul 13, 2012 12:53 pm

I plan on spraying a maple neck and ash body electric with nitrocellulose lacquer and would like to seal and colour it with amber shellac. Does anyone have experience with this or foresee any problems? Of course I will test first, so maybe that will answer the question but I am thinking of long term issues.
Thanks
James

Hi James,
A light sealer or barrier coat of shellac under lacquer is usually not a problem. If the shellac has some "thickness" to it, it can affect the adhesion of the lacquer. You might want to put a little amber dye in the lacquer instead of getting all the colour by building a shellac film.

Thanks Clay. My testing results with dye in lacquer are what I am looking for. I wanted to use up some shellac I prepared for a furniture projekt but now see no need in complicating the finish schedule on the guitar.
