The first time I built with the super quilted Sapele I was also concerned with it's tap tone or rather lack of it. The spec guitar turned out wonderful with a surprisingly bright and extremely rich and even tone. It sold very quickly.

I built a quickie guitar out of mahigany, which didn't sound like much tap-wise, but I thought made a great instrument. Never will know till it's done!

It not porn or bling but I thought it was interesting enough to bring home for the same price as rock maple.

I love how the grain on the back wood "bows" out slightly, accentuating the body outline; it looks like it already has a radius to it!

This is nothing really new but today I took a few swipes off a new board of maple and discovered this underneath:

What a wonderful sight.

And a terrible picture of a magnificent piece of Karelian birch:

Paul, that is really nice looking with the grain lines being quite variegated as well.

This is supposed to be a family friendly sight, so I will make no comment on the above photo. Either you see it or you don't!

A common problem with bookmatching woods with figure, and once noticed,it's impossible to un-notice it ever again. Might not want to risk it if it's for your sweetie.

I've had to scrap using several amazing backs because my wife noticed images I hadn't seen.

All I see is figured wood.. I never see "things" within grain/figure patterns, same as I can't look at clouds and "see" objects like others do.

I have a friend who drives me nuts because every time he sees a new instrument I've completed, he'll immediately say something like 'oh, cool, it looks like an alligator head' or whatever "thing" he's seeing within the patterns... Me, I just see nice wood.

I think psychiatrists have a term for those who "see" 'risque' things within objects, shapes or, in our case, wood grain/figure.

Or, maybe they have a term for those who don't?
