Re: Hello again! And next little project, a travel bass of sorts

I checked the other day, and the fretboard material was 3.50euro :D at Maderas Barber in Spain. Not exactly going to be a bass though, or, actually, also a bass (and also a guitar) It's weird :D three bass strings and three guitar strings 28"-25" scale lengths, tuned GCF on the bass side a...

Re: Hello again! And next little project, a travel bass of sorts

Hello Matthew, I posted it here in tools&jigs: https://www.mimf.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=6891 But I will say that in the meantime, I've made something else because I am working on a multiscale instrument: 20250509_200345.jpg 20250509_200342.jpg You can get a set of rails and T-nuts etc. on Amaz...

Re: How thin is too thin? Neckthrough bass

Parker Fly guitars used to be VERY thin, so 1 1/4" should be fine. I recently (well a year ago) St.Vincent inspired shortscale bass, and I used a shortscale bass neck off of Amazon (given that you wanted it to be a quick project). Not too terrible, I myself did not do any work on the neck profi...

Re: Moving on, a chambered 5-string medium scale fretless

This project has been on the back burner for a while, because I was still pondering the bridge and tailpiece solution. Recently have been looking at acoustics, so it is likely I'll do something like that Screenshot 2025-06-07 181152.png Screenshot 2025-06-07 181234.png Still some refinement to go fo...

Re: Taylor ES2

The circuit might be less forgiving for switching on and off, creating DC offset on the output and loud noises when switching on power. So they might have made something to disconnect output while the supply rails are switching on. Without seeing anything else, that would be my guess. I think it cou...

Re: Moving on, a chambered 5-string medium scale fretless

Thanks! This body shape evolved from my shortscale basses, and is based on the Alembic Stanley Clarke model, but then, better proportioned (IMHO) and with extended upper horn to counter neck dive. This is the first medium scale I am building with it, so let's see how much it likes to dive. And how w...

Re: Moving on, a chambered 5-string medium scale fretless

Yes, I went with the polystyrene, as it was the most consistent in colour, easiest to see, and also pretty easy to work with. Can post a closeup of it if you like.

Are you going to go with full fretlines or partial ones (think I've seen those also, not on a Steinberger though, not sure)?

Re: Moving on, a chambered 5-string medium scale fretless

A year already?!?!? No real progress on this instrument. Have built another, and started yet two others (5-string Fender Urge inspired bass, and a 6 string guitar/bass hybrid). Primarily because I have some things that require further thought. Not sure how to make the bridge and tailpiece, or what t...

Also, found cleats on thingiverse to hold handplanes. Works really well.

Re: 3d printed tools for luthiery

I have had a 3d printer for years already (Ender 3 v2), currently in a bit of state because I felt the need for auto leveling..... Best not to mess around with these, just buy it and use it (I do not prescribe to all the folks that feel that there are a bunch of upgrades that you need to do, mine wo...

Re: How do stacked pickups work?

In my opinion it is not just marketing, they do have different properties than a side by side humbucker so I guess it is helpful to differentiate the one from the other, and the coils are stacked on top of the other :)

Re: Alternative to wood on solid body

Aristides makes great guitars, and indeed their construction is somewhat of a trade secret. They have a formula, and they prefer it stays theirs. We can theorize though, and think of some ways to make a guitar without the use of wood. For example my guess is that they are using a carbon fiber shell...

Re: first build

Interesting testbed! I do not mind short lengths of fretwire if it is not too expensive Pipe clamps are really helpful! A big piece of plywood and some wedges can be used as well, but I definitely like my pipe clamps (I also make furniture, so I sometimes have glue-ups of longer panels). +1 on the f...

Same, learned a lot here, indeed also remember it to be more lively, but that is how these things go. It's a cyclic thing, I think. I dabble in electronics, and when I started building effects pedals and modular synthesizer modules, it was a pretty small community, which quickly grew very large, fro...

Ouchie, are you going to remove a piece of fretboard, glue in a new piece and then redo the fret slots? Or just fill the erroneous slots with veneer?

WOW, that is a schematic! :) thanks for sharing. Might be a fun project to try a power stage like that with some really old (50's vintage) speakers I still have. Re: DIY Guitar companion amp - JCM800 2W combo

Keen on seeing the schematic for your amp, surprised that the EF80 only has 2.5W max plate dissipation, they are bigger than the smaller double triodes, and ECC82/12AU7 even has a higher max plate dissipation.

What did you use for the output transformer?

Re: Please educate me on headless bass bridge/tuner hardware

The ABM ones are 50 euros each or so, and the head unit is sold separately, so that is quite expensive. Also, in my mind at least, it is more expensive than necessary. I always try to assess whether the price, whether high or low, makes sense. In the production volumes and quality ABM does, I see a ...

Fretboard prepared, sidedots fitted, headstock routed (will need to do some repairs because of a few blown out corners, The bigger follower bit I have is not as sharp anymore, will need to give that a go on the diamond plates. Glued on the fretboard on the neck, and started neck shaping, a very enjo...
